Do you use mirrors to beautify your home? Apart from the obvious purposes of mirrors, they can also be used to beautify the home and add interest in various ways.

We love mirrors and have used them in most of the rooms of our house, as they reflect light and make rooms look much bigger than they are. While shopping for our home improvement project, I always kept an eye out for mirrors on sale or in charity shops. Here I reveal how you too can use mirrors to make your rooms stand out stunningly.

Remember, the trick is not to purchase expensive mirrors. The aim is to find affordable ones you can do something else with. An old frame can always be painted as long as the mirror itself is sound.

Tips for using mirrors around the home

Use mirrors to show something of interest in another room, or part of the room

Use mirrors to reflect the best part of your room to double the effect

The utility room is never beautiful by anyone’s standards, especially when it’s as small as ours. Granted, this mirror reflects the tap and sink in the utility room, but this is the only position in which it can be placed in order to reflect the light coming from the back garden. You see, this room (the den) has no windows, so we can do with all the light we can possibly get. The glass door (between the den and utility rooms) and a partial glass wall provides this light. In addition, I positioned this mirror to catch the light, the greenery outside and the slender vase I placed in it’s reflective path.

Use a mirror to bounce light off glass items, light fittings, and chandeliers

Catch a chandelier in a mirror

I fortunately, caught a chandelier seller just when he was retiring and closing his shop. The result was this beautiful chandelier at an even more attractive price. Chandeliers and fancy light fittings are mainly made of glass. Having them reflect in a mirror or two produces a most remarkable effect. The picture above is not a first-hand image. It’s a reflection of the stairs and chandelier in a small mirror we’ve placed by the front door.

The light from the door bounces off the chandelier glass and onto the mirror – the daytime light is so bright, the image is a bit overexposed – and it’s not even a sunny day! You can see how we made over the stairs here.

Use a mirror to add depth to awkward walls

Mirror stairs

With the stairs being recessed, the wall on the right of it stood out slightly. Adding a mirror on this wall gives an impression that the hall is deeper than it really is. The mirror effectively pushes the wall back, and adds interest to the hall, especially with the guitar placed in front of it. Later, I’ll cover the entire wall with a mirror because it’s just a very small space and won’t cost much.

Use a mirror to cunningly disguise the size of your room

Mirror used to disguise/enhance room divider

We were fortunate enough to have a large living room which we could divide to include a tiny office space as well. The image above is of a mirror placed opposite the wall divider. As you know, a wall divider is a pretty, but functional addition to a room. However, they can make rooms appear a lot smaller than they are. Using the mirror opposite the divider reflects the depth between the divider and itself, making it (the space) seem twice as long. In effect, you ‘appear’ to have a larger room.

Use mirror to beautify your home and to distract

Just for the sake of being pretty

Wall art looks great, but it can also be functional. We had an accident with the side of this new wardrobe. To disguise the hole, I cunningly placed some flowers, which did the trick perfectly. The mirror at right angles to the wardrobe reflects the art. What this does is take the eye away from the wardrobe and to the mirror by forming a visual bridge (connection) to it.

No one looks closely at the wardrobe art any more – even I, who know what’s under it. This mirror is also opposite a window, so it reflects a lot of light into what could’ve otherwise been a dingy, dark corner.
